How to use caffeine pouches
A quick, no-nonsense guide to using a caffeine pouch properly and safely.
To use a caffeine pouch, place one pouch between your top lip and gum, leave it there for up to 30 to 45 minutes, then throw it away. You will start to feel it in about 5 to 10 minutes. You do not chew it, you do not swallow it, and you use one at a time.
Step by step
- Take one pouch from the tin.
- Tuck it under your top lip, off to one side, against the gum.
- Leave it in place. A gentle tingle is normal; you do not need to move it much.
- After 30 to 45 minutes, take it out and bin it. Most tins have a lid compartment for used pouches.
- Wait and see how you feel before considering another.
How many can I use?
Think in caffeine, not pouches. Add up everything in your day, pouches, coffee, tea and cola, and keep the total under 400mg for a healthy adult (EFSA), or under 200mg if pregnant (NHS). If your pouch is 100mg, that pouch alone is roughly one coffee.
Tips for a better experience
- Start low: if you are new, pick a pouch around 50mg to 80mg.
- Not late in the day: caffeine has a 5 to 6 hour half-life and can wreck your sleep.
- Move it around: switching sides now and then reduces gum irritation.
- Do not double up too soon: give the first pouch 15 minutes before deciding you need more.
